Drones

Through a new partnership with UVIFY inc this year we have acquired 400 drones and have further access to 25,000 drones. This now makes us the only company in Ireland capable of performing a large-scale drone show. IFOs are high-performance choreography swarm drones that make use of quad-constellation navigational systems to operate. This paired with their over 16 Million Wled light colour options means the skies of Ireland are a blank canvas and our drones are an airborne paintbrush. While this is a landmark occasion for us and the team at large a question we’ve been asked on more than one occasion is ‘Why Drones’? Why invest all this time, effort and money into this emerging technology that doesn’t quite have a foothold in Ireland yet?

The Price

Nearly 3 years ago while planning an event for a client we considered including drones in the package. At the time we just viewed it as a nice way to add a bit more spectacle to the event and weren’t overly familiar with the process of even doing such a thing. It turns out it was expensive. Really expensive. This was massively due to the fact that we would have to make use of another company based outside of Ireland incurring delivery fees, product tariffs and not to mention external pilot costs. While this wasn’t something financially feasible at the time it was something we wanted to offer our clients moving forward. Through this partnership with UVIFY and the qualification of our internal pilots, we can bring drones to the Irish market at massively reduced costs.

The ‘New’ Firework

There’s something inherently magical about fireworks. They add a certain level of almost Disney-esque magic to any experience. They’re one of our favourite Stage FXs to use. However, that being said they come with some complications. First, consider the noise pollution of fireworks, this can especially be an issue in residential areas. Secondly, there’s the issue of product waste. In this instance, drones can be a preferable option because they result in significantly less noise pollution and are overall a much greener product. However, for me, the real appeal of drones vs fireworks is the opportunity for greater customisation. The drone offers greater precision when compared to fireworks on the design front. Which brings us perfectly to my next point-

Drone Art

Technology is art. The greater the tools we have at our disposal the greater our potential for artistic expression. I’ve thus far referred to drones as an airborne paintbrush but I don’t think that goes quite far enough. When you see Lucie in the Sky, an interpretive dance piece featuring drones or Moombaki, a spectacle by the river reimagining aboriginal stories or the work of Carlo Ratti it becomes clear that Drones are more than paintbrushes but rather entirely new modes of artistic creation. The tools by which we can unlock new and innovative ways of expression.

The Innovative Brand

At Spectrum Productions we believe that innovation is more than just a buzzword. It’s our modus operandi. The belief is that through a combination of arts and science, we can continually present our clients with increasingly better experiences. It’s a belief that we share with many of our collaborators. Whether they’re in tech or entertainment, they also want to utilise emergent technologies to the best of it’s capability. To push the boundaries of technological innovation with the tools available. How can drones be used to revolutionise marketing campaigns? From QR codes in the sky to a new twist on the flash mob. How can they turn a corporate event into a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all those in attendance? How can you signify that the headliner of your festival is about to put on a jaw-dropping performance? For them and us, it’s not about reinventing the wheel, it’s about perfecting it.
